Runaways
¿What's exactly Runaways?
Okay, the runaways frequently are children or teenagers between the ages of ten and eighteen that who leave home for at least one night without their parents’ permission.
According to (Finkelhor, Hotaling, & Sedlak, 1990) a runaway episode is one that meets any one of the following criteria:
- A child 14 years old or younger (or older and mentally incompetent) who is away from home chooses not to come home when expected to and stays away overnight.
- A child 15 years old or older who is away from home chooses not to come home and stays away two nights.
Why?
They have a lot of reasons for the existence of this situation, the most common are:
- Family Dynamics: A bad relationship with their parents, constantly conflicts between they that make the word “Home” without sense.
- Physical, sexual, emotional and verbal abuse that ends in a very serious depression.
- Social pressure and the fear of failure puts them in a constantly stress that some prefer to avoid.
- Problems with drugs or alcohol.
Are runaway children at risk?
In accordance with (Polly Klass Foundation, 2013) :
- Over 70% of runaway youth have been considered to be endangered.
- 7% of youth in runaway & homeless youth shelters and 14% of youth on the street had traded sex for money, food, shelter, or drugs.
- 32% of runaway & homeless youth have attempted suicide at some point in their lives.
